Internet Explorer 9 Has Arrived

Image

Microsoft is pulling out all the stops to mark the launch of the open beta for Internet Explorer 9, a web browser the company promises will “beautify the web.”The IE9 beta launches today here at the Design Concourse Center in San Francisco with a major gala that includes hundreds of developers, journalists and Microsoft employees, as well as a live band playing on pedestals in the lobby.
“The browser is a stage. It is the backdrop of the web,” said Corporate Vice President of Internet Explorer Dean Hachamovitch.

Microsoft says that IE9 is a reinvention of the browser. It not only includes greater HTML5 and web standard compliance, but also the ability to turn any website into an application on the Windows taskbar. Thee websites are pinned to the taskbar, providing users with a one-click option to a their favorite websites. It also includes Windows 7’s jump lists; any website that supports them will provide a quick menu to its most popular webpages.

The focus of IE9 is on the “regular consumer,” which may irk those of us who generally have more than 10 or 20 tabs open at any given time. Tabs appear on the right side of the address bar, decreasing the amount of real-estate for tabs. To help decrease tab overload, they are grouped based on different websites within the taskbar.

Perhaps IE9’s biggest selling point is hardware acceleration. The company has used four developer previews to show off the speed of IE9 compared to its competitors. IE9 harnesses the PC’s hardware to accelerate graphics, videos and text. The result is that IE9 is able to render heavy graphic interfaces far better than even Chrome or Firefox.
The IE9 beta is available for download today on the Beautify the Web site Microsoft has launched as part of its promotional campaign. We have had access to the IE9 beta for a while now and will be posting our thoughts and reviews soon. In the meantime, let us know whether you believe Microsoftcan get back into the browser game with IE9.

Microsoft and ARM reach chip deal

Image

Microsoft has entered into a lisenceing deal with ARM that can make the software behemoth pull off an ‘Apple‘ act in future. ARM chipsets are almost the universal deity of mobile or embedded systems and the latest agreement will enable Microsoft to design their own chips based on the ARM architecture, a la Apple.
Both Microsoft and Arm Holdings have collaborated for years in the fields of software and devices, particularly in the mobile, consumer, and embedded product segments. Now with the software giant holding the license to design their own Arm-based microarchitectures, we can certainly expect smart devices coming from Microsoft in future.
Speaking of the deal, executive vice president Ian Drew of marketing at Arm said, “We have licensed our architecture and our instruction set to Microsoft. This type of license allows you to design your own microarchitecture.”
With this, Microsoft joined a select group of companies – Qualcomm, Marvell Technology and Infineon Technologies that have similar licensing agreements that enable them to design their own Arm-based microarchitectures.
“As an architectural licensee, Microsoft wants to go public about adding itself to that short list,” said Drew.
ARM happens to be one of the most high profile chip designers in the world, with almost everything from the Apple’s iPhone and iPad to high-tech toys and handheld calculators having an ARM chip at their core. It might be mentioned here that the Snapdragon processors from Qualcomm go on to power the Dell Streak tablet and Google’s Nexus One range of smartphones.
In Microsoft’s case, the deal could mean Window Phone 7 Series based slates and tablets having an ARM chip. Then the Windows Embedded Compact may also be provided with ARM derived technology in the future. Microsoft will perhaps also like to port complete Windows versions on to ARM in the LongARM project, something that isn’t possible at this moment. And then, who knows? Microsoft may even be planning to have ARM powering their next gen Xbox consoles.
So! Exciting times ahead as we await the launch of some smart products from Microsoft.
